Dr Yan Huang leads metallic biomaterials research at Brunel, working on both traditional permanent titanium implants and novel biodegradable magnesium medical devices for orthopedic cardiovascular applications. He recently won three research grants in biomaterials research from the Royal Society, EPSRC and European Commission. Dr. Huang is a founding member and co-investigator of the EPSRC Future Liquid Metal Engineering HUB where he leads the activities on process development and light alloy processing involving both solidification and plastic deformation. He has long-term interests in the characterization of microstructure and texture evolution during thermomechanical processing and fundamental issues of strengthening, plastic deformation and grain boundary migration.

Dr Evangelos Kordatos is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Materials Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. He is also Course Leader of BEng/MEng Materials Engineering. Dr Kordatos graduated with a MEng degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Ioannina, Greece, in 2008. He received his MSc in Chemistry and Materials Technology and his PhD in Materials Engineering from the University of Ioannina in 2013. Upon the completion of his PhD, he became a Postdoctoral research associate at the Texas A&M University, Texas (USA). Dr Kordatos’ research is focused on the study of the mechanical and thermal behaviour of advanced materials, such as Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs), Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs), Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs), Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), smart materials, etc. He has worked extensively on the non-destructive monitoring of materials behaviour developing advanced NDE (Non-Destructive Evaluation) methodologies based on Infrared Thermography, Acoustic Emission and Ultrasounds.

Piedad N de Aza studied Chemistry at the Autonoma University of Madrid and Ceramic at the Santiago de Compostela University where she received her PhD. She did a postdoctoral stage at the IRC in Biomaterials at the Queen Mary & Westfield College, University of London (U.K.) working on in vitro and in vivo behavior of bioceramics. At this moment, she is the Head of the Materials Science, Optic and Electronic Technology Department, Professor of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering and Researcher in the Bioengineering Institute at the Miguel Hernandez de Elche University.

Design and developing new polycrystalline biomaterials (dense and porous) with controlled microstructures making use of appropriated phase equilibrium diagrams and to study, a part of their physical properties, their behaviour in vitro (stem cells) and in vivo (bioactivity in rats and rabbits). Actually, main emphasis is putting on the tissue engineering field study of the tissue-ceramic implant interfaces.

PD Dr. habil. Yogendra Kumar Mishra is leading a group with the focus on ‘3D Hybrid Nanomaterials’ at Functional Nanomaterials (FUN) Chair, Institute for Material Science, Kiel University, Kiel, Germany. He received Ph. D. in Condensed Matter Physics (Plasmonics) in 2008 from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and then migrated to Kiel as Alexander von Humboldt Fellow and since then has been working at FUN Chair. In 2015, he finished his Habilitation (Priv.- Doz./Venia Legendi) degree in Materials Science from Kiel University. During his research period in Kiel, he introduced a new fabrication technique, the ‘Flame Transport Synthesis Approach', which allows versatile nanostructuring of metal oxides and their 3D interconnected networks as ‘Flexible Ceramic Materials’. The introduced tetrapodal 3D shaped ZnO nanostructures by him have found lots of application scopes in engineering and biomedical fields. Also the sacrificial nature of ZnO enables tetrapods to be used as templates for the growth of hollow tetrapodal structures from other new materials, like Carbon-Aerographite, Si, GaN, h-BN, etc. which offered wide range of multifunctional applications. He has published more than 100 papers including many in top ranked magazines, such as Materials Today, Advanced Materials, Nature Communications, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces and others.

Chang-Seop Lee received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Kyungpook National University, Daegu, South Korea in 1979 and 1981, respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree from Oregon State University, U.S.A., in 1991. Presently, He is a chemistry professor in Keimyung University, South Korea. He has published more than 124 research papers and 14 books, and also enrolled 37 patents in the fields of surface chemistry, electrochemistry, sensors chemistry, rubber chemistry, fiber chemistry and composite materials. He is the vice president of Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (Daegu regional Federation).

Sokovnin Sergey Yur’evich graduated from the Tomsk Politechnical Institute in 1983 with the diploma of engineer-physicist. After graduating he worked in Institute of High Current Electronics of Siberian Branch of RAS (Tomsk) as an engineer and junior researcher (since 1985). Since 1986 he work in the Institute of Electrophysics Ural Branch RAS as junior researcher. He graduated from the post-graduate courses of the IEP UB RAS and got a degree of Candidate (1994) and Doctor of Technical Sciences (in Electrophysics) in 2005. Since 2011 he is a leader of the Electrophysics Technology Group IEP UB RAS.

He developed several repetitive nanosecond electron accelerators with a semiconductor opening switch and a thyratron magnetic energy compression circuit, which work in the Russian and foreign scientific institutions, and they also are introduced in production. He is carrying out work aimed at applying a repetitive nanosecond electron beam to conduct chemical reactions, perform sterilization, and clean water. He developed method and setups for radiochemical sterilization of hermetically packed medical instruments and liquid, powdered or granulated materials in food industry. He developed a method for production of nanopowders, including evaporation of a target by a pulsed electron beam, condensation of the vapor of the material in a low-pressure gas, and deposition of nanopowders on a large cold square crystallizer.

Dr. Meiyong Liao obtained his PhD in Materials Sciences in 2002 from the Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academic of Science, China. He was a visiting associate professor of Kyoto University, Japan, from 2002-2004. After that he was a postdoctor researcher in National Institute for Materials Sciences (NIMS), Japan, from 2004-2008. Since 2008, Dr. Liao has been employed in NIMS as a Principal Researcher. He had also be a visiting researcher in CNRS, France (2007-2008), and Marie-Curie Fellow (2014-2015) in Aston Unvierstiy, United Kindom. He has published more than 160 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has been serving as an editorial board member of Scientific Reports and Journal of Nanomaterials.

Marcelo Prado is a metallurgical engineer with M.Sc. and Ph.D. on Metallurgical and Materials Science Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ, Brazil). Part of the Ph.D. was performed in the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials (IRC, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London). Marcelo Prado is currently an Associate Professor in the Military Institute of Engineering (IME, Brazil), being also in chief of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory. He was the President of the International Society for Ceramics in Medicine (ISCM) in 2008. Underegraduate course on Metallurgical and Materials Science Engineering at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1991), master's at Metallurgical and Materials Science Engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1994) and Ph.D. at Metallurgical and Materials Science Engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1999). From 1997 to 1998, spent one year of the Ph.D., by a sandwich programme, doing experiments in the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials (IRC-QMW, U.K.). Post doctoral research on porous bioceramics and composites performed at INEB - University of Oporto (2000-2001).

Dr Anshuman Srivastava, obtained his Ph.D in the field of Material Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, India. He has worked as a Joint Director (R and D), IIP Mumbai, Government of India. He is having long industrial and academics experience. Presently, he is working as Director in SIET Allahabad, India. Koorosh Gharebhaghi holds BC (Eng), MEng, PhD and a MEd. Koorosh has worked as an academic and professional Engineer in both public and private sectors. He has been employed in various municipalities and some large private organisations, specialising in heavy construction. His past projects varies from high rise Buildings to Civil structures. A key aspect of his research include, composite materials for various purposes. Koorosh is currently an academic at RMIT and also consults as a professional engineer and senior technical advisor on mega and large infrastructure projects in both the public and private sectors. His current membership include MIEAust, MITE, MIIE, MCIAust and MATSE.

Takashiro AKITSU, PhD is a full Professor for the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science Division II at Tokyo University of Science. He completed his under graduate school training (chemistry) from Osaka University, Japan and his graduate school training (physical & inorganic chemistry, especially coordination, crystal and bioinorganic chemistry) from Osaka University (Ph.D. 2000). After Keio University and Stanford university, He moved to the current affiliation since 2008. Dr. Akitsu has published up to about 180 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has had posters presented at international level. He has been a peer reviewer of many journals and acted an organizing committee of several international conferences.

He was awarded the “Constantin Miculescu” Prize of the Romanian Academy (2017) as well as Prizes of BBU for Scientific Excellence (2014 and 2017), Comenius Prize (2012), and STAR Advanced Fellowships for research (2016). Dr. Lucian Baia published more than 130 peer-reviewed papers, three books, five book chapters, 4 patent applications, has an h-index of 23, and is serving as editorial board member for several scientific journals.

Dr. Murugan Ramalingam is Professor at the Centre for Biomaterials, Cellular & Molecular Theranostics, VIT University, India. He is also Adjunct Professor at the Tohoku University, Japan and Associate Professor at the Faculté de Chirurgie Dentaire, Université de Strasbourg, France. He has worked at the WPI Advanced Institute for Materials Research, Japan, as an Assistant Professor. He has also worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), under the U.S. National Academies Associateship program. He received his Ph.D. in Biomaterials from the CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute, University of Madras. He has also undergone training in Ethical and Policy issues on Stem Cells from Harvard University, USA, and in Operations Management from the University of Illinois-Chicago.
